Integrate suggestion from review to improve consistency with existing code.

michael@0 1 Please be apprised of the following Legal Notices:
michael@0 2
michael@0 3 A) The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia has
michael@0 4 ruled that the Netscape Navigator code does not infringe Wang's U.S.
michael@0 5 Patent No. 4,751,669 ("the '669 Patent") because: 1) HTML is not
michael@0 6 Videotex as defined by the '669 patent; 2) web servers are not central
michael@0 7 suppliers; and 3) Navigator does not "connect," as defined by the '669
michael@0 8 Patent, to web servers on the Internet. Wang may appeal this decision to
michael@0 9 the Federal Circuit. Wang contended that its Patent disclosing a
michael@0 10 "Videotex" system, is infringed by the following functionality in the
michael@0 11 Netscape Navigator code: 1) the animated logo and status line indicators
michael@0 12 --See Claims 1,8 and 9; 2) the "File Save As" function --See Claims
michael@0 13 23-27; 3) Bookmarks and Rename Bookmarks in the Properties window --See
michael@0 14 Claims 20-22; 4) storing HTML, GIF, and JPEG files and adding filename
michael@0 15 extensions --See Claim 38
michael@0 16
michael@0 17 B) Intermind owns pending U.S. patent applications on communications
michael@0 18 systems which employ metadata ("channel objects") to define a control
michael@0 19 structure for information transfer. The Netscape code does not infringe
michael@0 20 as released; however, modifications which utilize channel objects as
michael@0 21 described by Intermind should be considered carefully. The following is
michael@0 22 a statement from Intermind: "Intermind's claims fundamentally involve
michael@0 23 the use of a control structure to automate communications. ...The
michael@0 24 essence of Intermind's top claim is that two devices sender and receiver
michael@0 25 have persistent storage, communicate over a network, and exchange a
michael@0 26 control structure including metadata which describes: 1) what
michael@0 27 information is to be updated, 2) when to update this information, and 3)
michael@0 28 how to transfer the updated information. In addition, at least the
michael@0 29 receiving device must be able to process the metadata in order to
michael@0 30 perform the update determination and transfer. Any digital
michael@0 31 communications system which incorporates all of these elements will be
michael@0 32 covered by Intermind's patents." See Intermind.com.
michael@0 33
michael@0 34 C) Stac, Inc., and its licensing agent Hi/fn, own several patents which
michael@0 35 disclose data compression methods implementing an LZS compression
michael@0 36 algorithm, including U.S. Patent Nos. 4,701,745 and 5,016, 009 ("the
michael@0 37 Stac Patents"). The Netscape Communicator code does not perform
michael@0 38 compression. If you modify the Netscape source code to perform
michael@0 39 compression, please take notice of the Stac Patents.
michael@0 40
michael@0 41 D) Netscape Communications Corporation ("Netscape") does not guarantee
michael@0 42 that any source code or executable code available from the mozilla.org
michael@0 43 domain is Year 2000 compliant.
