     1.4 +
1.5 +The FreeType 2 font engine is copyrighted work and cannot be used
1.6 +legally without a software license. In order to make this project
1.7 +usable to a vast majority of developers, we distribute it under two
     1.8 +mutually exclusive open-source licenses.
     1.9 +
1.10 +This means that *you* must choose *one* of the two licenses described
1.11 +below, then obey all its terms and conditions when using FreeType 2 in
1.12 +any of your projects or products.
    1.13 +
1.14 + - The FreeType License, found in the file `FTL.TXT', which is similar
1.15 + to the original BSD license *with* an advertising clause that forces
1.16 + you to explicitly cite the FreeType project in your product's
1.17 + documentation. All details are in the license file. This license
1.18 + is suited to products which don't use the GNU General Public
    1.19 + License.
    1.20 +
1.21 + Note that this license is compatible to the GNU General Public
    1.22 + License version 3, but not version 2.
    1.23 +
1.24 + - The GNU General Public License version 2, found in `GPLv2.TXT' (any
1.25 + later version can be used also), for programs which already use the
1.26 + GPL. Note that the FTL is incompatible with GPLv2 due to its
    1.27 + advertisement clause.
    1.28 +
1.29 +The contributed BDF and PCF drivers come with a license similar to that
1.30 +of the X Window System. It is compatible to the above two licenses (see
    1.31 +file src/bdf/README and src/pcf/README).
    1.32 +
1.33 +The gzip module uses the zlib license (see src/gzip/zlib.h) which too is
1.34 +compatible to the above two licenses.
    1.35 +
1.36 +The MD5 checksum support (only used for debugging in development builds)
1.37 +is in the public domain.
